This panel is dedicated to discussing a historic view of artistic action and work in the last forty years. For the purposes of analysis and discussion, we have divided the era into three different periods, or into three different modes of cultural-political operation. If we can state that ‘68-generation artists took a long march through the institutions and now run them, that the artists of the 1980s established their own organisations and became, in some ways, the entrepreneurs of their own businesses, what are the strategies that artists employ today? Networking? Residencing? Temporary autonomous zones? Survival strategies?
